Behind the Scenes: How We Cast Ba

By Legacy Studio Bus Productions

Every great story begins with the right character. For Coming From Afrika, that responsibility belonged to Ba—the heart and soul of the series.

From the very beginning, we knew Ba couldn’t simply be another television character. He had to represent millions of young Africans chasing dreams beyond the borders of home while carrying the values, traditions, and memories that shaped them.

Finding that balance was one of the biggest creative challenges of the entire production.

A Different Kind of Casting

Unlike traditional productions, Coming From Afrika was built using a groundbreaking hybrid production model that combines artificial intelligence with live-action filmmaking.

Rather than viewing AI as a replacement for creativity, we saw it as another tool in the storyteller’s toolbox.

Our creative team spent countless hours designing, refining, and developing Ba’s appearance, personality, and emotional range until he felt authentic to the world we wanted to create.

Every detail mattered.

His smile.

His hairstyle.

His wardrobe.

The backpack he carries.

Even the way he stands when he’s uncertain about his future.

Nothing was accidental.

More Than Just a Character

Ba isn’t a superhero.

He’s not a millionaire.

He’s not trying to save the world.

He’s simply a young man leaving home for the first time.

That simple idea became the foundation of the series.

We wanted audiences to see someone who could be a brother, cousin, son, or friend.

Someone who experiences excitement, fear, homesickness, culture shock, and hope—all in the same day.

By combining AI-assisted character development with real performances, locations, editing, and storytelling, we were able to create a character that feels both cinematic and deeply human.

Building a World Around Ba

Creating Ba wasn’t just about creating one person.

It meant building an entire world around him.

His loving mother.

His cousin Legacy waiting for him in Los Angeles.

The unforgettable taxi driver.

The friends, strangers, and communities he encounters along the way.

Each character was carefully developed to make Ba’s journey feel authentic and emotionally grounded.

Together, they help tell a story that crosses continents while staying rooted in family and culture.

The Human Touch

One of the questions we’re asked most often is:

“How much of the show is AI?”

The answer is simple.

AI helps us expand what’s creatively possible, but the heart of Coming From Afrika comes from human imagination, real experiences, and authentic storytelling.

Every scene begins with writers.

Every episode is shaped by directors and editors.

Every emotion is guided by people who understand the journey we’re trying to tell.

Technology helps us build the world.

People give it meaning.

A New Way to Tell Stories

At Legacy Studio Bus Productions, we believe the future of filmmaking isn’t about choosing between technology and tradition.

It’s about bringing them together to create stories that might otherwise never be told.

Ba represents that future.

He’s the first step in a journey that combines innovation with culture, comedy with drama, and Africa with America.

And if Episode 1 is any indication, his adventure is only just beginning.

Thank you for joining us on this journey.

We can’t wait for you to see where Ba goes next.

Watch Episode 1 now and become part of the Coming From Afrika story.
